Chanukah Day 6
Tonight we light Six!
The Hebrew letter that stands for the number six is vav - ו. There are many interpretations for what the letter vav stands for, all based on its shape as a vertical line to which has been affixed the letter yud like a handle at the top.
The letter appears to be a hook, something that holds two things together. That’s appropriate, because when a vav comes as the first letter in a word, it often means “and,” the conjunction that “hooks” words together. The notion of connection [chaverut] is central to the Mussar teachings of Rav Yerucham Levovitz, who writes:
The foundation of the commandments is connection and attachment, because connection and attachment are the foundation of the Torah, and of love. The Torah, Israel and the Holy Blessed One, they are one.
Can you see this connection and intertwinement represented in the 6-cornered star?
May the conjoined light of our six candles inspire us to foster connection and closeness, first, among those we love and then widening out to include others in ever-spreading concentric circles.
